For starters, I will let you in on my ticket-searching-secrets and how I find the best deals. I use an app called Kayak to find the majority of my flights. You can select exact dates, or a date range, that you want to plan your trip for. Then, you can select a maximum budget you are willing to spend, for today I set the budget for round trip flights under €100. Finally, simply select that you are flying out of Rome, hit ‘Explore’ and see all the amazing places you can go. Kayak offers a list of flights that are the cheapest and best when regarding the amount of time it takes to get there or number of layovers (this is another setting you can select to choose how many layovers you’re willing to have, if any at all). By keeping a consistent eye on the prices of countries you want to visit you’ll begin to recognize the patterns of when the price increases and decreases and soon you will be a travel-budgeting pro! I typically find the best prices about 50 days before my desired departure date.

#3 Barcelona, Spain- Starting off with the most expensive round trip of the article is Barcelona, Spain and the tickets are still only €49, and sometimes they can be even cheaper if you keep track of the ranging prices. Barcelona seems to be the hotspot for students to go to for their very first trip while at John Cabot. Not only are the plane tickets very cheap, but there is always something to do at any time of the year.
Barcelona is a fantastic place to go if you are also particularly looking for a place with good nightlife.
But if you’re particularly interested in the culture or architecture, you can find tickets into the very famous Sagrada Familia for as low as €33! The city also offers a various number of cheap tours ranging from €2-€5 that should not be passed up on. You can go on a standard walking tour, a tour of Barcelona’s gothic quarter, or of Barcelona’s cathedrals, squares, and markets. These make for great daytime activities, and who knows maybe you’ll find a fun place to spend your evening that night!
There is a lot to do and see in Barcelona, but the cheap flight and bright nightlife makes it out to be a fun weekend with your friends outside of Italy!
#2 Nice, France- You can fly to this adorable, southeastern town in France for only €36! Many people tend to jump on Paris when they plan a trip to France, but Nice shows another side of France that is particularly stunning. On this coastal town you will find cathedrals, museums, opera houses, castles and more interesting architectural sights that differ from the grand architecture you’ll find in Paris. Nice offers a lot of coastal tours to surrounding villages for an affordable price, as well. Another traveling app that I use on a consistent basis to find good prices for fun activities in the areas in visiting is Get Your Guide. Here you can find ranging prices of tours and activities anywhere you go, and Nice has a lot of trips for as low as €40 per person that will take you along its coast or through the streets of its town.
The most interesting thing of Nice, France that everyone can enjoy is simply walking around the Old Town Historic District. And this is completely free! Of course, some of the sights you will see will cost money for entrance, but many of the cathedrals and markets you may find along the way are free entrance. just like in Rome!
If you are planning your trip in the Summer, then you will have to go swimming on the beautiful beaches of Nice and try some Mediterranean seafood that is also typically very budget friendly!
#1 Tirana, Albania- You can book a round trip flight to Tirana, Albania for as cheap as €29! This is a great trip to book if you are looking for one that is cheap and last minute. The round-trip tickets to Tirana, Albania stay consistent regardless of when you are buying your tickets which makes it very easily accessible at any time of the year. The flight is cheap and convenient. It’s a direct flight that takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes to fly! And if this still isn’t enough to convince you to take a trip to Albania, then the overall cost of food and hospitality will. Everything in Albania was so much cheaper than most places in Europe. I went to Tirana in the fall semester and a lot of people asked me, “What is there to do in Albania?” I, honestly, thought the same thing, but since the flight was so cheap, along with everything else on the trip, it opened up a lot of opportunities to spend that money on other activities and adventures that made the trip so worth it.
If you are planning on staying in Tirana during your trip, here are some affordable things to do there that I did that everyone must try. For starters, my favorite thing I did in Albania that was very affordable and drop-dead gorgeous was the Dajti Express lift that is about a 20-minute taxi ride from the city center. I spent the day taking a conveyor belt life to the very top of the mountains in Albania and it was amazing. The tickets for the the lift were only €14 to go up the mountain, stay up there as long as you want, and to come back down. The city also offers a lot of free walking tours of Tirana, as most cities do, but I always take them up on this offer because it is great way to familiarize yourself with the city, and I often find myself seeing things that I will want to check out later in my trip. Finally, Tirana has a great nighttime scene. There are a lot of bars, and even some clubs, that do not charge an entrance fee, so you can go in for as long as you would like and then check out the next one.
If you are planning on taking a day trip from Tirana during your trip, I would highly recommend Durrës, Albania. You can easily take a bus from Tirana airport directly to this seaside town, and it is perfect for a relaxing day by the sea. And, once again, everything you’ll find here is very affordable.
This may be the best place to travel to as a college student because it is very economical and has the possibility of being a very fun, relaxing, and enjoyable time with your friends!
