Democracy not only focuses on political figures in suits, but also on the relationship between political forums and the life of everyday people and the civic space that allows them to practice their rights. The streets of Rome and Greece, captured in candid moments, become a canvas for democracy’s whispers—where politicians once coined the very structures that inspire our democracies today, and individuals that seamlessly blend into the vibrant dance of public squares, gathering, bringing to life the very essence of democratic ideals.

These pictures, taken at the crossroads of democracy and everyday life, push us to explore beyond the confines of political structures. The streets become a collective canvas—a testimony to the politics of everyday life and the diverse voices that it contributes to the rich tapestry of democratic ideals.

The 2022 IDEA report states that half of the world’s democracies are currently in a state of decline. Similarly, a Pew research center survey across 27 countries points out about a median of 51% are dissatisfied with how democracy is working in their respective country, while 45% of people are satisfied. The survey showed varying democratic satisfaction across nations, with notable dissatisfaction in Italy, Spain, and Greece.

The living, breathing nature of thriving democracies lies beyond political rhetoric. Civic spaces are one of the most integral parts of a democracy. As the Secretary General of the Council of Europe stated in 2018:

“Political freedoms are not a luxury in a democratic state; they are a necessity. A democratic society cannot be built or preserved if freedom of assembly and freedom of association are not guaranteed, encouraged and respected. These political freedoms are an indispensable check on any democratic power. Freedom of assembly and freedom of association are key building blocks of democratic security.”
